卷板機按照工作狀況分為：冷卷和熱卷兩種。工作能力是指板材在冷態下，按規定的屈服極限卷制最大板材厚度與寬度時最小卷筒直徑的能力。當卷制板厚較大或彎曲半徑較小并超過設備工作能力時，在設備允許的前提下可采用熱卷的方法。個別不允許冷卷的板材，熱卷剛性太差，則采用溫卷的方法。
